Writer Maggie Bullock wrote about her visit to Dr. Kingsley's New York headquarters for Vogue Magazine. She said the session began with Dr. Kingsley closely examining her scalp with a magnifying glass. She was then quizzed on her health, family history, and daily diet. The diagnosis: "a slightly oily, mildly irritated scalp" that showed early signs of hair loss.
The In-clinic Treatment
Once the diagnosis was in, Dr. Kingsley sent Bullock to the treatment room where her scalp was massaged with a combination of menthol, salicylic acid and sulfur. Technicians then coated the rest of her hair with Dr. Kingsley's deep conditioner, the Elasticizer. (According to PhilipKingsley.com, this conditioner is "intense" - a "highly concentrated and super moisturizing" hair treat.)
The Kingsley Centres offer three intensive treatments that are customized for each client.
- Treatment for naturally dry, coarse, frizzy and chemically damaged hair: This treatment includes deep conditioning with the Elasticizer. The Kingsley Centre recommends a series of these treatments to "ensure the healthiest, shiniest and most beautiful hair you ever imagined."
- Treatment for flaky, itchy scalp: Treatment creams are applied to remove scalp flakiness, itchiness and inflammation. One or more sessions are recommended "depending on the severity of the condition." The end result is a clean and healthy scalp.
- Treatment for hair loss and thinning hair: This treatment strengthens and rejuvenates hair growth with an intensive scalp stimulant cream, relaxing scalp massage and heat application
At-home Prescription
With her hair slathered in products, Bullock was seated under a dome of warm steam for approximately 20 minutes, then treated to a circulation-enhancing scalp massage. Bullock said that once her hair was dry, it felt "soft and supersilky." She left the clinic with strict instructions for her at-home regimen that included using Philip Kingsley moisturizing shampoo & conditioner, scalp tonic and smoothing serum.
Dr. Kingsley's entire range of products includes shampoos, conditioners and scalp tonics in Body Building, Moisture Balancing, and Remoisturizing formulas. There's also a protecting serum called PK36, an anti-frizz serum, plus styling creams and a product called the Maximizer that adds body to fine, limp hair.
The Kingsley web site is full of information on hair loss and how to combat the problem. One particular section of interest deals with nutrition. Although he advises checking with your doctor first, Dr. Kingsley recommends the following sample diet for optimum hair health:
