If you have thinning hair, bald spots, or are completely bald, it's extremely important that you protect your scalp from the sun's damaging rays. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the sun is responsible for more than 90 percent of malignant cancer growths. And, because your scalp is the highest point on your body, it's especially vulnerable to getting dangerous doses of UVA and UVB rays.
  • Sunscreen Facts: The SPF (sun protection factor) number on a bottle of sunscreen tells you how much protection you have from UVB, the light rays that cause sunburn and skin cancer. (When applied correctly an SPF of 15 will protect you for about two hours.) But you also need to consider UVA light, which causes wrinkles and increases the risk of cancer. To fend off both types of rays, look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen containing zinc oxide or avobenzone (Parsol 1789). There's also an excellent ingredient called Mexoryl, which has not yet been approved for sale in the United States. It can be found in products like Ombrelle and Anthelios, two Canadian products that can be easily purchased online.

Our pick for best broad-spectrum scalp protector is the Ocean Potion Dab-On SpotStick (SPF 60), a roll-on that glides easily over the scalp and ears.

  • How Much Is Enough? Generally speaking, you should apply about a teaspoon of sunscreen to your face and neck and another teaspoon to your ears and scalp. You'll want to reapply every two to four hours that you're outside.
  • A Hat is Mandatory. A hat is absolutely mandatory for protecting your scalp, yet all styles are not created equal. First, you want to choose a hat with a wide enough brim all the way around. Although a baseball or golf hat will protect your scalp, it does nothing to protect your ears, neck and side of face. Next, remember that fabric matters. You want a very tight weave that won't let light pass through. If you have a favorite hat you just can't part with, you can treat it with a product like Penguin UV-Block to ensure that no harmful rays get through.

Our top style picks for women include the Physicians Endorsed brand St. Tropez Wide Brim Draw string Hat, which comes in a variety of fun colors. For men, the Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat looks great and includes a Coolmax headband to protect you in comfort.

  • Examine Your Scalp. Be sure to examine your scalp, ears and neck regularly for any suspicious moles. These include moles that are raised, asymmetrical, have border irregularities, are more than one color, or are as wide as a pencil eraser. In addition, schedule a yearly mole check-up with your dermatologist and be sure to ask that he thoroughly examine your scalp as well as the rest of your body. As unlikely as it sounds, some doctors have been known to skip the scalp entirely during a mole check.
