Bella and Gizmo's Adventures Wins Award: Book Helps Children Cope with Alopecia
Sunday April 23, 2006
Nightengale Press author, Jodi Pliszka has won the prestigious Adding Wisdom Award from Parent to Parent for her book, “Bella and Gizmo’s Adventures ― The Hairless Sphynx Cats.”
Ms. Pliszka explains her book’s purpose best: “Children need our help to understand differences in this world. Bella & Gizmo's Adventures -- The Hairless Sphynx Cats helps educate children
about being different and help to break that "Barbie Doll" stereotype. The word games in the back of the books will help children to reinforce their learning from the stories. The more children learn about being different, the more prejudices will be eliminated, for education reduces prejudice.”Pliszka understands how Bella and Gizmo feel because she, too, has no hair due to alopecia universalis. Her books are designed to help children avoid feeling ridiculed, instead, helping them feel unique and special.
