Hairstyle Too Tight?

Wednesday January 12, 2005
Traction alopecia is getting media attention, due to the popularity of hair extensions and other potentially damaging hairstyles. An article from the New York Times News Service warns consumers that Tight braids, ponytails can cause permanent hair loss.

Here's the scoop: Any hairstyle that pulls on the scalp for a long period of time can cause hair loss. The hair loss can be reversed if the hairstyle is changed in time... but prolonged wear can lead to permanent loss.

Styles to be careful with include tight ponytails & braids, cornrows, buns, chignons, and twists. You should also be careful with hair extensions that are glued or sewn into the hair, as well as with hair pins that secure hats for hours at a time.

Signs to watch out for include an itchy red scalp, tension headaches, hair breakage around the scalp, and random bald patches.

If you notice any of these symptoms of traction alopecia, stop wearing the offending hairstyle immediately. If you have to wear your hair off your face for school or work, be sure to take it down in your free time, and practice scalp massage to keep the circulation flowing.

My African braider braided my hair in too tight and too close to the scalp Senegalese twists, that were so tight the scalp was raised and painful.Days after I removed the twists I had small pimplelike bumps around the hairline then days after it progressed to thinning patches of hair.I then got antibiotics clindamycin 300 mg 3x a day every 6 or 8 hours for 10 days it cleared up this staph infection[scalp folliculitis],the hair has not grown back yet.Avoid very small parts that are too close to the scalp[the hair should not be parted so small or braided so close to the scalp that you can’t see your roots.Get a receipt and take her to small claims court.I’m informing her customers about her.I’m in the process of taking her to small claims court.

you go girl…certain “ethnic” braiders wrap your hair around and around. I paid a woman to basically pull all my hair out, cuz that’s what she did. Go get her, ma! I hope I see you on Judge Mathis someday.
